Is it Wrong?? Apparently.

Good Monday morning! I was messing around with some of my finished Farmer's Wife blocks this weekend and put them out on a black background. There is very little white in my blocks. Well, everyone had a fit!

There seems to be some law about using black in an FW quilt! Yikes! There are very few blocks in this group that I love but I love blocks other people are doing with a lot of white. I guess I'll just start over and use the pink, red, aqua and white that a lot of people are doing. I seem to be drawn to those. I might, just to be a rebel, do a little wall hanging on black (oh the horror) with the blocks I have finished in this colorway. So don't report me to the Quilt Police! It was just a thought!

Have a great week! Cheery wave from Bev

I think it looks great with a black background. It's your quilt, do what you want to do with it. Who says you have to do it like everyone else? That is part of being an artist, letting a bit of yourself shine through on your creations.

With your Bright colors the Black is fine. I've not ever heard of the NO black Rule! It's your quilt do what YOU want.

Wait! No! Pink! Put them on PINK! lol

Seriously? The Quilt Police said no black on an FW? That would make me want to put extra black on it (not sure how to put "extra" black on anything - but I would try). :)

I've found that black can make a huge difference in a quilt. Just because the Quilt Police wouldn't use it, it doesn't mean it's not allowed! No Quilt Police!!! Do what YOU want.

Bev, after reading your comment, I thought that was a strange "law" and decided to Google to see WHY this was frowned upon. While looking, I saw many FW quilts that were sashed in black or used black in them. Apparently not all people are aware of this "law". Is this really frowned upon? Did they tell you why? I am so curious about this. I am just starting to pull fabric for my FW quilt blocks and thought I should better understand this.

I love brights with black. It is a little bit Amish and maybe the farmer's wife lives in an area where there is an Amish influence. If I were you, I'd give that little rebel a big hug and go for it.

Hi I think they look good on black, I never ever follow patterns color wise or the way it has always been done . As I design a lot of my own quilt tops I just go with what I feel like. I have the farmers wife book and will be creating them in the colors I want and use an appropriate background color.
If we didn't break out of the quilters box we wouldn't have all these lovely fabrics and easy patterns.
We need to change and alter to keep the quilting world going on to the next generation.

Oh, boo! I agree, it is your quilt. I love breaking the rules!! The "quilt police" need to find more to do with their time;) I personally like the black, keeps it from looking like everybody else's.

I think you should hold on to your rebel ways! Life is short. What ever floats your boat! You have a wonderful sense of color. Trust your gut girl!

I vote for black Bev. It sets your blocks off nicely and is very dramatic.

In my humble (and quiltingly-less-experienced!) opinion, I think that what makes each quilt unique and equally fabulous as the next, is the quilter's own unique sense of style and creativity! Black or white? I say go with whatever makes you happy and feels right for your quilt :-)
Either way, your blocks are gorgeous.

The joy of being the maker of the quilt is that you can make it anyway you want. Do what pleases you.

Thanks so much everyone! The quilt police are sorry. You guys all rock!

Seriously? and now you're thinking about starting over and following everyone else? Don't do it, hold your head high and do what you want. Be the rebel, your quilt will be beautiful and really stand out.

I can't believe you would start over - this is beautiful on black! Who says FW can't be on black? Do we not adjust most patterns to fit what fabrics we want to use, what colors we love, etc. Don't let the criticism of other dictate what your heart and eye love. blessings, marlene
