Smart or Not So Smart....

How was your 4th of July? Hope you had a fun celebration! I received the first BOM of the Austin Bluebird quilt on Thursday so I finished the pieced parts yesterday (there's also an applique block). The background is the cream white and the fabrics are Minick and Simpson so they are dark for me-not what I usually use. Of course, I love all color schemes and I love this country look.
But I got the idea that, I'm cutting out these pieces and I'm going to be making applique templates so.....I thought, why not use the bright fabrics I love and just layer them for cutting and make two quilts. It's not that much more work because, for me, most of the time is pressing and cutting the fabrics. Stitching doesn't take that much time. So I'm making a second Austin Bluebird quilt and here's the second colorway:
This is either going to be a great idea or I'm gonna be cussing it by the end of the quilt. So what do you think? Have you ever made two duplicate quilts at one time? If so, how did it work for you? I like this BOM by the way EXCEPT that the applique block has to be enlarged 300%. That means a trip to the print shop and spending money for the enlargement. Probably not too much but kind of irritating. I really appreciate getting the BOM (which is sold out now but the pattern will be in the Minick and Simpson Etsy shop soon-I'll let you know when) so don't mean to complain but here I am complaining. I'll have to actually get dressed in "real people clothing" instead of my ragged old t-shirt and shorts, fix my hair - shoot, maybe even shower - and drive somewhere. Geez....I'm one of those crotchety old women! Well, off to do some playing at the machine...I'm going to try to get the rest of my Oklahoma Beauty blocks put together today (4 more to go) and start picking out the paper from the paper piecing. Have a happy day! XOXO Bev

Bev I took a class where we cut once and ended up with 2 baby sized quilts. I thought it was wonderfully smart but in the end I only bound and quilted one, which I sent to a girlfriend who was having a baby before I ever got married. The other is on my UFO pile, 10 years later, and in that time I've married, had my kids, and they've grown too big for a baby quilt! It was still a great idea though!

I like both colour choices here, will be fun seeing this develop. Like you I get annoyed when things have to be enlarged, it is pretty expensive to have done too. So we will soon see the Oklahoma quilt done, excited about that as the blocks were so colourful, Trust you enjoyed your shower!!!
