Happy Valentine's Day! I have a question for you!

Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you have something romantic planned. I know you're probably sick of seeing my Great Granny blocks but I have a question. Please let me know what you would do because you are the experts in the field of quilting (you know you are)! Here's a collage of some of the blocks:

I'll be using a border fabric that has a directional print. My question to you is, when you use a directional print on the border, do you cut it all in one direction (which will give the quilt a top to bottom look) or do you run it parallel to each side? I hope that question make sense. Here's the fabric I'm using for the border:

So what direction would you cut the fabric to border this quilt? Thanks for helping me out with this! What have you been up to? Today the temp is going to be 70 and tomorrow it's going to be 30. Crazy weather. I haven't had my MRI yet because of the way things are scheduled now. I cannot get an MRI in a regular machine! So I requested an Open MRI. Well, that's not in my "system" so my doctor had to make a special request and it's taking forever. It finally was scheduled for Wednesday. Things are getting more complicated every day in the medical field from the patient's point of view.

Have a happy day! Please visit me on Instagram (click on the little camera in the left column at the top-I'm FabricWoman) and follow. I'm trying to get the hang of it. The biggest issue for me is getting decent photos on my phone. I know, story of my life. Thanks for helping me out with my border issue! XO from Bev

I am no expert...but I go with what I am using the quilt for......if it is a bed quilt then I would put the direction of the border print in the most pleasing way when you look at it from all angles. (Does this make sense?) If it is a wall hanging I go with what looks good when it is hung-all going in the same direction. Do you see what I mean?
I think what I am trying to say is go with what pleases YOU best!! haha

Perfect answer Paulette! I agree. When on a bed i would opt for the fabric border to face the same direction....for a wall hanging/table topper i would be more inclined to have the fabric border to appear going around clockwise. Hard to explain...but i think you get it. :) Hey...guess who just might be driving through OK in April!!!!! Happy Valentines Day!

Because the border fabric is quite busy, I would want it to go straight up and down. But, really, I don't think it makes a lot of difference. Go with what pleases you. For me, personally, I never border my quilts. Mainly because I can never get the borders cut straight, I don't have a big enough surface to cut them out on, so out they go. I just put an extra row of blocks on. BTW, the granny squares look fabulous. Love the colours.

Here's my tuppence worth.. The dresses are going in both directions, so no problem with the sides. The top and bottom I would also have the dresses facing in the same way-directly north/ south. Like others say - do what is pleasing to you as you are the creator of this quilt. The blocks all look great together.

Bev if you're interested in my .2 cents, I agree with Lynne. I'd cut the sides of the border so the dresses run up and down, so on the lengthwise grain. Then I'd do the top & bottom on the cross grain, so the dresses will continue running up & down. That way when you look at the whole thing the dresses will all run up & down, if that makes sense.

Hi Bev: With that cute dress fabric, I would do it all the same direction, top to bottom. It will be so cute! I just love your projects. Love, Derrith

With that print I would cut it up and down with the direction in the picture and just have it placed sideways on the top and bottom. Does that make sense?

So, i am a little late to comment but here it goes. I do not always do directional with directional fabric. Depends on the application.

For what you are doing with the dress fabric I would run it directionally north south on the sides for sure. Lay that out then try your top and bottom borders both ways berfore you cut and sew them to see what makes you feel warm and fuzzy. It will either give it motion by looking like it is traveling around the quilt, or be all the same direction and uniform. It what ever clicks with you......
